Two halves of a sign and a perfectly good pallet.

Using salvaged materials for paintings could be seen as a result of living in an age of excess. There is an environmental benefit of making use out of otherwise perceived useless objects, yet that is not the only reason to use them.

Found materials offer an element of unpredictability and chance, which can trigger spontaneous, creative, problem-solving . This plays with notions of automatism which are present within the histories of Neo-expressionism and Surrealism. By being unable to fully plan the work, automatic subconscious reactions take the lead. Although, the oddness and imperfection which comes with found surfaces and substances will alway push back. This creates a reactive bond between the artist and the artwork, which contributes to a constant state of emergence throughout this method of making.

In this way, previously discarded objects and paints raise questions in regards to who or what has more agency over the outcome of an artwork. It is a toss-up between what the object and paint can afford and the artist's intention and reaction to those affordances.

Install Plan

ree

So far the plan is to display three of my works. Two will be hung, and one is free standing

  • The two hanging will be hung on the diagonal wall

  • The two hanging paintings will be hung on two seperate pieces of pine trim which I will hammer into the wall

  • The straight wall section will be blank to provide space for people to view the works at a distance.

  • The free standing work will be in front of the two hanging works, with space to walk around the work.
