I have gathered all my materials over and begun my creating!

3x Patch boards from Mitre 10 cut in half creating 6 square surfaces. I've glued a stainless steel 90 angle brackets to the back of each one with epoxy glue designed for both cementitious surfaces and metal. This idea came from the Tool Box with Noel last year. Specifically when he said that it is wise to plan how the work will be hung before work on the painting begins.

Why patch board? Because the series of paintings I am working on is about common paint problems, so contextually, it makes sense to create the paintings of substrates which speak to the arena these paint problems exist in. Other substrates I am considering are: James Hardy board, powder-coated steel, cement block and weather boards. I am starting with Gib as it is an accessible surface to gather and it provides the starting point for so many common paint problems.

On the edges of all the 6 boards I have coated the edges in Resene Concrete Clear. This is to block the powdery Gib in around the edges. I have then taped these off. This is because I want it to be obvious that the paintings are made on Gib.

I have then primed the boards with Broadwall which is the correct sealer as I want the initial layer to stick to the board so I can then accentuate the paint problems on-top of the boards.

Colour:

I want to use the most common paint colours which I find in the paint recycling. And I have been gathering these at work in the various types of paint needed to execute the paint problems I want to recreate.

Alabaster for sure, Black White, Surrender, etc

What paint problems am I thinking of recreating?

  • Crazing

  • Cracking

  • Mud Caking

  • Cratering

  • Frosting

These problems will be doable on Gib, and will be familiar to an audience and they will be unrecognisable colours to establish a secure contextual connection between the artwork and my contextual investigations.
