My last critique mentioned that my support for my paint cakes didn't quite hit the mark. So this time I plan to lean heavily on decadence as a theme for my supports.

I have been thinking about why people choose white or slight off-white for there walls.

  • Colour seems to be only allowed if it is surrounded by white. Think of feature walls.

  • Colour seems to imply, for people in this country at least, the infantile, the silly and non-serious.

  • Well thought out colour schemes, (which actually include colours), can give a space personality. This takes work. It is so much easier for people to just choose white, because at least then they know for sure that it won't be offensive.

  • White has a 'purity' associated with it since biblical times, in most western countries.

  • A vast number of people just do as they've seen done, they don't want to stand out or take any risks, so white is their safe choice.

Artwork which talks to this fear of decadent colour deserves a decadent installation tactic.

From the Mt Wellington waste/refuge centre, (which houses odd bits and bobs from in-organic collections), I was gifted an old aluminium(?) bed frame, which once painted could become a really decadent shelving solution for my paint-cakes.

Below are some photos of the bed frames transformation:

Next step is to prime and coat with an enamel.

Colour to be decided.
